In situ compaction of clayey soils and clays placed as fill was tested using a 130 mm long, 100 mm diameter cylindrical core cutter. 
By using the core cutter method, the bulk density of the soil can be calculated quickly, and the dry density of the filler can be calculated by determining the moisture content of the soil, thus calculating the void ratio. 
A high percentage of voids indicates poor soil compaction.

Cylindrical core cutting machine is a seamless steel pipe. 
To determine the dry density of the soil, the cutter is pressed into the soil so that it fills the soil without disturbing the core contents. 
The cutter filled with dirt was lifted. 
The quality of soil in the cutter has been determined. Then the dry density is obtained.
